As a painter, I continue to draw from nature, responding to the abstract without abandoning the observational. I find that standing before my subject—whether a person, a landscape or a simple pot—gives me the opportunity to explore a kind of motion, a quality of life and light not otherwise available. I am challenged by the urge to paint images that are accessible while bringing about a harmony of physical elements that goes beyond mere subject matter. In this I am drawn to light—cast or reflected, sunlight or man-made, clear and sharp or diffuse.
